The most obvious bloating pregnancy symptom is how you feel like you are swelling up or inflating, and suddenly your jeans begin to feel snug immediately after your pregnancy test shows positive. The bloating early pregnancy symptom and the bloating itself are caused by the hormone progesterone. The bloating pregnancy sign relatively shows up for the first time around week 11 and will last through the delivery day.

What Causes

The hormone relaxes the smooth muscle tissue in the body, including that of the gastrointestinal tract. It results in the slowing down of digestion, so more time is required for the foods you consume to reach your baby.

Don’t immediately blame on hormone for your bloating pregnancy symptoms since it is important to maintain a healthy pregnancy. Apart from that, the expanding uterus puts more and more pressure on rectum, wreaking havoc on muscle control and leading to the passing of wind. Hence, bloat and burp and fart.

What You Can Do

Even though pregnancy bloating is inevitable, you can do these things to deal with the discomfort. Drink plenty of water to get things moving through the system. It can also help avoid constipation, which can worsen bloating.

Include a healthy amount of fiber in your diet—whole grains, fruits, legumes, leafy greens, and such. But don’t fit in too much as it can turn into a gas accident.

Eat smaller meals. Remember that the more food pumped in at one sitting, the more gas pumped out. Hence, rather than eating three meals a day, opt for, let’s say, six small meals or three moderate ones with two to three snacks. This helps prevent the digestive system from overload.

Take things slow when you are eating. Do not finish down your lunch in three minutes flat, as you are most likely swallowing not only food, but also plenty of air. Hence, regardless of how busy your day is, it’s always best to eat slowly for two main reasons: (1) To avoid the discomfort; and (2) To make the most of the break you deserve.

Not only should you eat in smaller portions, it is also best for you to stay relaxed while eating. Anxious eating also leads you to swallow air while eating. Calm yourself before you have your, let’s say, sandwich during your lunch break. Besides, isn’t your lunch break intended for you to take an actual break as you eat?

And last but not least, it is best not to overdo the beans in your diet. While beans are a great source of protein, in addition to other nutrients, they are one of the gas club members—and overdoing it can be a very, very bad news for you.

Other types of food in the gas club also include onions, cabbage, sugary foods, rich and buttery sauces, and fried foods. Opt for the pregnancy diet instead.
